| The Chorus Line This group of paintings and preparatory drawings are a narrative about the possible end of humanity. Over consumption, over population and a culture of extreme self-interest may bring about a collapse of the natural support systems that gave rise to our species. The masquerade is a devise used to symbolize the culture of universal dissembling. The face we concoct to hide our true selves from reality and from each other. The masks are the media, the face of the hive mind. The Last Fisherman shows us a possible last man on the planet, clinging to a post. St. Sebastian, only here there are no arrows of Roman vengeance. Instead the wounds are the marks of self-inflicted disease or perhaps the vengeance of the nature. These three canvases are an exploration of the possibilities of this theme. Peter is planning to do more, culminating in a mural sized grouping. When He works on a subject it is a process of discovery and so he really does not know the outcome. Maybe in the end, on the last canvas, we will all survive. |
